OCT MS39 – The device that helps us fight keratoconus disease
Keratoconus is a condition that severely affects vision. This disease is manifested by progressive deformation and thinning of the cornea over many years.
Generally, keratoconus starts in adolescence and is caused by several factors:
- genetic heritage. Approximately 10% of keratoconus patients have a family member with the same disease;
- allergies;
- excessive eye rubbing;
- various endocrine diseases;
- connective system disorders.
What are the main symptoms that keratoconus patients have?
Symptoms are mild at first, progressing as time goes by. The first symptom is a slight blurring of vision, followed by symptoms such as the appearance of glare around lights (halo), difficult vision at night, headaches or sensitivity to bright light.
Is there a treatment for keratoconus?
Yes! To recommend an effective treatment, however, it is necessary to determine exactly what type of disease the patient has (round-cone, oval-cone, frustule or keratoglobus) and the stage of the disease. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment consists of wearing suitable glasses, crosslinking surgery, or in advanced stages, the application of a corneal ring or even corneal transplant.
OCT MS39, the device that can perform complex corneal investigations and make an accurate diagnosis of keratoconus
Fortunately, although keratoconus is a degenerative disease that is constantly progressing and is quite difficult to detect it in its early stages, there are solutions whereby the cornea can be analyzed in the smallest detail, so that those affected can benefit from an accurate diagnosis.
The OCT MS39 is a high-performance topographer that analyses the cornea in detail and allows the doctor to provide an accurate diagnosis and make the best treatment decisions. The device is often used in cases where keratoconus or glaucoma is suspected, as well as in refractive surgery, lens implant or when patients suffer from dry eye syndrome.
What are the benefits of the OCT MS39 device?
The most important advantage is that it can provide a superior level of detail on the structure of the cornea, in all its layers. Because of the detail, keratoconus can be diagnosed at an early stage, even before the disease sets in, when other devices cannot detect it. The device is also extremely useful for other types of eye problems:
- helps to plan the treatment of refractive eyes;
- helps diagnose and monitor glaucoma;
- examines the condition of the tear film. The information obtained from this analysis can lead to the correct diagnosis of dry eye symptoms.
The OCT MS39 is a highly accurate diagnostic instrument that should be used whenever laser eye surgery is desired. Although laser surgery can be very effective for the recovery of vision in certain refractive errors, in patients with keratoconus or at risk of keratoconus it is very dangerous because it intervenes on the cornea and there is a risk of ectasia.
When to turn to an examination with OCT MS39?
Whenever you have one of the symptoms of keratoconus or when you want to undergo laser surgery to improve your vision and get rid of glasses and want to make sure you are completely safe.
The MS39 OCT device is used in Dr. Holhoș clinics.
